MEBIUS

Mebius, raziskovalno razvojna dejavnost, zastopanje in trgovina, d.o.o. (Mebius d.o.o.)
Mebius d.o.o. is a private, limited liability company, based in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It was founded in 2008 with the intent to bring developments in the research fields of electro-catalysts, and sulfonated and non-sulfonated polymer membranes containing protic organic inorganic ionic plastic crystals (POIIPC) for both LT and HT PEMFC out of the laboratory and onto the market.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

The activities in the company following its founding were focused on the use of innovative platinum/transition metal alloy catalysts for low- and high-temperature hydrogen fuel cells, for which Mebius holds joint patents with the National Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana in Japan, USA and EU. Other activities include exploring, as well as pioneering catalyst deposition onto various substrates (GDL/MPL, PEM) by using ink-jet materials deposition printing technology as well as developing new LT and HT PEMs having higher conductivity and durability at lower relative humidity conditions.
In 2017, Mebius’s potential was recognized by a panel of judges at the InnoEnergy PowerUp competition held in Budapest by awarding us with the Wild Card prize, which served as a direct invitation to participate in the InnoEnergy Highway Acceleration Programme, following which, at the end of 2019 KIC InnoEnergy had formally entered the ownership structure of Mebius d.o.o. with an investment of €150.000.
Mebius is now in the phase of production scale-up of catalysts, membranes and MEAs with a goal to reach production rate of 30.000 MEAs/y with average surface area of 200 cm2 and Pt loading of 0.2 mg/cm2 in 2023 and 1.3 M MEAs in 2026. For that purpose Mebius is in contact with a group of angels and VCs investors.
Mebius d.o.o. is a founding member of two industry interest groupings within Slovenia, one is the Development Centre for Hydrogen Technologies (www.rcvt.si) and the other is the Centre of Excellence for Low-Carbon Technologies (www.conot.si). Mebius d.o.o. is also a member of SolarImpulse Foundation (www.solarimpulse.com).

ROLE & KEY CONTRIBUTION

In MORELife project MEB will use inkjet printing technology to deposit cathode and anode catalysts onto the commercial perfluorosulphonic acid ionomer-based membranes (e.g. Nafion and ePTFE reinforced Nafion membranes) to form CCM. The proprietary MEB cathode catalyst samples that will be deposited on the ionomer membranes are supported on either Cabot Vulcan XC72R or Akzo-Nobel Ketjenblack EC-300J carbon-blacks.
